Placement Matters: Turkish Airlines

Chapter 5 about Scouting Environments and Chapter 12 about Delivery discuss how the larger environment in which a design appears can greatly affect how an audience responds to that text.

As an example of how "not" to place an image, consider this advertisement for Turkish Airlines.

Can you see the problem with the ad placement? How would you revise it to make it more palatable for viewers?

Font Fight

Some designers and readers note how a typeface has a particular "personality."

Take a look at this video that displays a "font fight" between different typefaces, some of which are mentioned in Chapter 10. How are some of these typefaces personified? How do they use stereotypes? Are these stereotypes justified, or possibly offensive?

How would you personify the typefaces instead?

OpenDyslexic Font

Chapter 10 of The New Media Writer discusses how typography can affect readers and what to consider when choosing a typeface.

This article discusses a new typeface developed for readers that have dyslexia, particularly when reading online. As the article states, the font, designed by Abelardo Gonzalez, "features heavily-weighted bottoms to help give letters 'gravity,' thus curbing the brain's ability to rotate characters and make them look like other letters."

Photoshopping Models

Chapter 11 of The New Media Writer discusses the different levels of editing and includes the editing decisions of static media such as photographs. Most editing is done to present a more consistent and accurate text for your reader. However, some editing is done to make an image more aesthetic for the viewer, and chapter 11 discussed different filters and techniques.

However, some editing substantially changes the photo which can sometimes be considered unethical, even when that photo is not photojournalism. Consider this video that discusses how advertisers photoshop and edit women's bodies in order to create certain messages that help sell their goods.

Unintended Audiences

Especially when discussing the possible readers of new media text, The New Media Writer has tried to point out that once an electronic text is sent by an author, it can easily be disseminated and used by others, often reaching audiences the original author never intended. As an example, take this email sent to news anchor Jennifer Livingston that comments upon her weight. Note how Livingston uses social media and mass media to disseminate the author's letter to a much wider audience, and then provides a counter to his (or her) approach.
